Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Parker University recognizes that AI technologies, such as language models, generative content tools, and data analysis platforms, can enhance teaching, learning, and research. However, the use of AI must align with the University’s core values of integrity, accountability, and respect for intellectual property. Students are expected to use AI tools responsibly, transparently, and in accordance with course-specific guidelines.
Acceptable Use:
Students may use AI tools when:
The instructor or course syllabus explicitly identifies acceptable use of AI-assisted work.
Option 1: Use of AI is Prohibited: In this course, students are not allowed to use AI programs to complete any submissions. < Writing, analytical, and critical thinking skills are essential aspects of this course>. Each student is expected to complete all submissions without using AI programs. Students must prepare all submissions; any AI-generated <text and> submissions are not permitted and will be treated as plagiarism.
Option 2: Use of AI is allowed only with prior permission: In this course, students are allowed to use AI programs to complete assessments if the instructor’s permission is obtained in advance. Unless permitted to use those programs, each student is expected to complete all assessments without using AI programs. If permitted, <students are expected to write a note to clarify where in the process they used AI and which platform(s) they used>. AI-generated materials should be cited like any other reference material. Using AI programs without proper citation will be treated as plagiarism.
Option 3: Use of AI is allowed only with acknowledgement: In this course, students are allowed to use AI programs to complete assessments, if that use is properly <documented and> cited. <Proper documentation includes writing a note to clarify where in the process AI program(s) were used.> AI-generated materials should be cited like any other reference material. For example, text generated using ChatGPT-3 should include a citation such as: “Chat-GPT-3. (YYYY, Month DD of query). “Text of your query.” Generated using OpenAI. https://chat.openai.com/” Material generated using other AI programs should follow a similar citation convention. Using AI programs without proper citation will be treated as plagiarism.
AI is used as a supplemental learning aid (e.g., for grammar checking, brainstorming, or concept clarification).
The student clearly acknowledges and cites the use of AI tools in their work, as directed by the instructor.
AI tools are used for approved research or data analysis within ethical and legal boundaries.
All university data, including personal student information, must be anonymized and held in the strictest confidence according to HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
Prohibited Use / Academic Misconduct:
Use of AI constitutes academic misconduct when a student:
Submits AI-generated content as their own original work without proper disclosure or permission.
Uses AI to complete assignments, exams, or assessments that are meant to evaluate individual understanding or skill.
Employs AI tools to fabricate data, references, or research results.
Uses AI to impersonate another person, falsify identity, or produce misleading academic submissions.
Fails to follow course-specific AI policies or instructor directives regarding AI use.
The release of university data is not permitted.
Violations of this policy will be addressed through the University’s academic and professional standards procedures and may result in disciplinary action.
Faculty Responsibilities:
Clearly communicate course-specific expectations regarding AI use in syllabi.
Design assessments that promote authentic learning and critical thinking.
Provide guidance on appropriate AI tools and citation methods when applicable.
Student Responsibilities:
Understanding and adhering to this policy and any course-level AI guidelines.
Disclosing AI use transparently when required.
Exercising academic honesty in all interactions involving AI tools.
